Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 1 – The next adventure begins
Today was our Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 1, the start of our latest cycle tour adventure.
We got the train up to Ravenglass, arriving at lunchtime.
The official Hadrian’s Cycleway starting point is the Roman Bath house, so we made our way there passing the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway station.
From here the route started along the coast up to Seascale. The paths were a little overgrown in places.
As we dropped down into Seascale, there were some great views of the beach.
We spotted some picnic benches near the sea and decided to stop there and eat our packed lunch.
The path then followed the sea up to Sellafield.
The cycle way heads along to Egremont, the Whitehaven before joining up with the Sea-to-Sea (C2C) route for a while.
We stopped in Whitehaven and had an ice cream at the harbour (near one of the starting points for the Sea-to-Sea (C2C)).
The route then took us up to Workington (an alternative starting point for the Sea-to-Sea (C2C)).
Our next stop was at Workington where we had coffee.
From Workington we then went off course and followed the Sea-to-Sea (C2C) route up to Cockermouth (as that is where we were staying for the night).
We were staying at the Travelodge in Cockermouth. We enjoyed a relaxing drink in the bar there to round the day off nicely.
We had cycled just over 40 miles on Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 1. The weather was fabulous! The main hills were on our detour to Cockermouth (this does mean we have some hills first thing tomorrow as we retrace our steps back to the route). However we had a really great day.
