Wicken Fen and Fen Cottage

Wicken Fen and Fen Cottage

As I was cycling from Cambridge to Ely, I passed Wicken Fen. I hadn’t realised I’d be doing this when plotting the route. However, it was no accident, since NCN Route 11 includes a section called The Lodes Way. This little route was put together by Sustrans and National Trust and links Wicken Fen to Anglesey Abbey, a place I would be visiting the following day. Of course, since it was lunchtime when I arrived, I started off by having…

Andy S’s Mountain Goat

Andy S’s Mountain Goat

Having had an Open University tutorial cancelled at the last minute I took the opportunity to contact Andy S and suggest we go out for a cycle for a few hours. Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 6 – The adventure ends

Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 5 yesterday saw the completion of the route. Today, Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 6, it was time to go back home to Stockport. Before we set off home however we thought we would have a taste of Newcastle (or at least a tiny portion of it).   Still the weather was looking down kindly upon us. We began Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 6 by leaving Travelodge Newcastle Whitemare Pool. We made our way through Gateshead. Eventually we arrived at…

Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 4 – Haltwhistle to Corbridge

Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 4 – Haltwhistle to Corbridge

Following yesterdays entry into Hadrian’s Wall Country, Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 4 enabled us to visit a further three Roman forts as we continued our journey. It was yet another lovely sunny day as we left our little cottage at Haltwhistle.    Our first fort of the day was Vindolanda Roman Fort. It is an impressive place to visit.    As well as the archaeological remains there is also a museum containing an impressive range of Roman artefacts and telling the story…
