Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 2 – Cockermouth to Carlisle

Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 2 – Cockermouth to Carlisle

Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 2. Following Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 1 of our tour, today was our longest day, from Cockermouth to Carlisle. This would mean cycling back to Workington and then following the coast up to the start of Hadrian’s Wall. From there we would finish the day by cycling on to Carlisle.

It was another lovely sunny day when we left Cockermouth. We started by returning to Workington retracing our path from yesterday following the Sea-to-Sea (C2C) route along NCN 71.

The first town of the day we passed through was Maryport.

For the rest of the day we would be cycling along the Solway Coast.

Passing through Silloth we took a picnic lunch in Abbey Town outside Holme Cultram Abbey. The abbey is currently going through renovations so it isn’t yet a place you can visit and walk around.

We continued to follow the coast to Bowness-on-Solway where the route of Hadrian’s Wall begins.

We stopped off for a welcome drink at Port Carlisle. No time to rest though, for we had a deadline to meet – we needed to be in Carlisle for 5.00pm!

The entry into Carlisle had a few obstacles to overcome!

Finally we arrived. Still no time to stop however. We quickly showered and changed before meeting up with our friends Andy and Sylvia, and their children Nathaniel and Alex, for a lovely meal at the nearby Masala Bazaar Indian restaurant. It was great to see them again and catch up on all the news. Amazingly it is a year ago since we last saw them!

We have cycled nearly 69 miles today for our Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 2. Overall the route was thankfully quite flat. However having had the sun beating down on us all day we were hot, tired and weary by the time we finished.
