Welsh Borders Day 4 – Knighton to Welshpool

Welsh Borders Day 4 – Knighton to Welshpool

For Welsh Borders Day 3 we had crossed into England for a section of the route. Hopefully today on Welsh Borders Day 4, a potentially easier day, we would stay on the Welsh side of the border as originally planned.

While the tour had been greeted with both heat and then rain, followed by cooler weather. As we headed into the middle of the tour the temperature had begun picking up again. So, it was a lovely sunny morning when we set off out of Kingston.

For the first ten miles or so, we followed the River Teme. We were also hugging the Welsh/English border.

As we followed the valley of the river, it steadily climbed.

It was another day of very little traffic and fine views.

Finally, we reached the top and took a breather.

What goes up must come down. So, after the breather, we enjoyed a long steady downhill.

At Abermule, we joined an overgrown Montgomery Canal. This section also forms part of NCN Route 81.

We followed the canal for the next few miles until we reached Garthmyl.

Here, we left the canal and headed over The Nags Head for lunch. The sun was strong now, so we were glad for a little shade while eating.

Following lunch, we rejoined the Montgomery Canal again.

This took us all the way into Welshpool.

We cycled through the town centre.

And found a pub, the Pheasant Inn. It seemed a good idea at the time.

However, when we headed to our accommodation in the heat and up a hill (we were staying somewhere booked by Des!!), it didn’t seem such a good idea after all.

We were staying at Tynllwyn Farm. This was a fine location with lovely views out over the hills around Welshpool.

In the evening we went back to Welshpool for a meal at Spice Infusion, an Indian Restaurant. The food took over an hour to arrive and we were the only diners in the building! That said, when it did so, it was quite enjoyable.

Today had been another enjoyable day of cycling along the Welsh Border. It had been in searing heat so were thankful there had been less climbing than on previous days.

Tomorrow we are off to Ruabon.
