Women on Wheels

Women on Wheels

Stockport Community Cycling Club today joined up with CeracycloanWoodsons Cycles and Tandem Coffee House this weekend in organising a Women on Wheels Cycling Day as part of TfGMs Women on Wheels month. This is a programme of female-friendly events aimed at supporting women who cycle or wanting to give it a go.

Sarah, ride leader for the day

For the Stockport event the day started at Ceracycloan where there were free bike checks and minor adjustments by Ceracycloan and Woodsons Cycles mechanics.

Eventually the ladies were ready for the ride. Sarah was the ride leader, ably assisted by other SCCC female leaders. While the guys acted as marshals.

The route began by dropping down to and crossing St Mary’s Way, and then cycling through St Thomas’s Recreation ground.

From there we weaved our way through to Mile End. Unfortunately, at this point Sarah fell off her bike when she clipped a marshals cycle and went tumbling, injuring her back.

She gamely carried on.

The route next took the riders down Castle Farm Lane.

And then crossed over Dialstone Lane heading towards Offerton.

After successfully negotiating Marple Road, the ladies briefly entered Woodbank Park at the point where it runs alongside Woodlands Park.

Then back on to the Offerton back streets again before re-entering the main section of Woodbank Park.

The women crossed over St Mary’s Way via the new walking/cycling bridge.

Before finally dropping back down to Hillgate where the ride finished.

At the end of the ride the ladies (and the blokes too!) were provided with a free drink by the good folk at Tandem Coffee House as a reward for their cycling.

This had been a short five mile ride. Short it may have been, however it was really appreciated by all those who came along. Indeed, the whole Women on Wheels day had proved a great success. Thanks to all organisers – Stockport Community Cycling Club, CeracycloanWoodsons Cycles and Tandem Coffee House … and of course, a special thank you to all the women who came along and participated in the event.
