Portland Basin 2019
Last Saturday was Stockport Community Cycling Club‘s AGM. As has now become a tradition, it was followed by this Portland Basin 2019 cycle ride.
This year the AGM was held at Bredbury Library.
Leaving Bredbury, we headed for Woodley.
Here we joined the Peak Forest canal.
We followed the canal all the way to Portland Basin.
At Hyde, we crossed over from one side of the canal to the other.
Navigating one bridge, we got it slightly wrong. Instead of going through the tunnel we thought we could just go up a path and then back down again on the other side. Which we could. Except there is a gate onto the canal. Next time … we’ll just use the tunnel.
There was a fantastic carpet of daisies on a stretch of grass just before the Basin.
The clouds were also looking ominously darker.
Crossing over at one of the bridges we stopped for a break at the Bridge View Cafe. There’s also a museum at Portland Basin.
After lunch, we joined the Ashton Canal and headed for Guide Bridge.
However, one bridge was just too steep for one of our riders and resulted in a snapped chain for one of our riders.
Once fixed, we continued on past Guide Bridge, where we noted a new path being built down to the canal.
We left the canal at Audenshaw and headed for Fairfield.
We joined the Fallowfield Loop.
This meant we picked up NCN Route 60 for a short while. We left the Fallowfield Loop at Reddish.
We then joined NCN Route 6 briefly, followed by NCN Route 62.
This brought us to Reddish Vale Country Park.
We left Reddish Vale and cycled on through Brinnington.
Then through Bredbury Industrial Estate.
Finally, we weaved our way through the backstreets of Bredbury, and back to the start.
Our Portland Basin 2019 route had cycled covered 15 miles. You can view our Portland Basin 2019 route below:
