Mid Wales Day 6 – Llangollen to Chester

Mid Wales Day 6 – Llangollen to Chester

Day 5 of our Mid Wales tour had provided us with a gentle recovery ride after the previous day’s hills. Today, our route from Llangollen to Chester would be slightly longer, but thankfully, also without too many hills.

We left Llangollen on another sunny morning.

We began by taking a little detour. This took us up the hill to Plas Newydd house and gardens

The house is a stone built cottage converted into a gothic fantasy by two Irish ladies, Lady Eleanor Butler and Miss Sarah Ponsonby, known as ‘the ladies of Lllangollen’. They captured the imagination of Regency society and received a stream of famous visitors to the unpretentious little cottage which, over the years, they added gothic features including the stained glass and elaborately carved oak.

We then cycled back through the town and re-crossed the River Dee.

Before re-joining the Llangollen Canal again.

Following the canal took us along NCN Route 85.

After a few miles we arrived at Pontcysyllte.

Of course, Pontcysyllte is famous for its aqueduct.

We walked across it rather than cycled.

It is an astonishing piece of canal engineering and in a fabulous location.

Continuing along the canal we now joined NCN Route 84 and cycled through the Whitehouse Tunnel.

A little further along the we left the canal at Chirk and stopped for a tea break.

After leaving Chirk we cycled around the edge of Wrexham, while still essentially following the route of the River Dee.

This eventually brought us to Bangor-on-Dee.

We decided to stop for some lunch.

After lunch, we crossed over the stone arched bridge.

The next town was Holt.

Then, after crossing the River Dee again we arrived back in England at Farndon.

On the road into Chester we came across the fabulous field of wild flowers at the Barnston Memorial. It was truly amazing.

Finally, we arrrived in the outskirts of Chester.

Today, we had cycled nearly 37 miles. It had been another great day of cycling. You can view our Mid Wales cycle tour route from Llangollen to Chester.

In the evening we enjoyed an excellent last tour night meal at Shrub. It is a restaurant we can highly recommend!

We finished the evening off with a brief little walk around parts of the city.

Tomorrow, we cycle home.
