Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 3 – Carlisle to Haltwhistle
Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 3. Before leaving Carlisle and starting our cycling, we wanted to take some time to have a look around. Our first stop was Carlisle Cathedral.
Having locked up the bikes, we had a look inside the Cathedral.
From there we cycled over to Carlisle Castle, which is maintained by English Heritage.
Having had a look around, it was time to set off towards Haltwhistle. The route took us through Brampton.
We had decided to stop at Lanercost Priory (also managed by English Heritage) for lunch. However it was about 3:30 when we got there though, so it was rather a late lunch! There was a lovely gift & farm shop there and a really great café.
Feeling suitably refreshed, we had a look around the Priory.
The Priory shop sold some very nice ice cream too! We then headed off towards Birdoswald Roman Fort (maintained by English Heritage) and on the way we got to see our first glimpse of Hadrian’s Wall.
Unfortunately by the time we reached Birdoswald, we were too late to get in but did manage to see part of it.
There was a section of Hadrian’s Wall near there that you could stand on, so of course we just had to do so!
As we continued on towards Haltwhistle we crossed over into Northumberland.
Haltwhistle had a very interesting bus stop in the centre.
We were staying in a little cottage just outside Haltwhistle. Unfortunately this was at the top of a huge hill! It was a very compact cottage but was very cosy.
Today on Hadrian’s Cycleway Day 3 we cycled just over 30 miles but climbed about 2200 feet, so was much hillier than previous days. However the weather was really warm again and very sunny in the afternoon. A fabulous day again!
