Lincolnshire Lost Lanes
I had some spare annual leave, so I thought a short Autumn cycle tour would be perfect to fill that time. Since Sarah would be missing from this one, Lincolnshire Lost Lanes has turned into a guy’s trip. Cycling this tour will be me, Andy S, Andy S, and Mike.
This little cycle tour around Lincolnshire is inspired by Jack Thurston’s series of cycling guidebooks. The fifth in the series is a celebration of cycling around Central England, including Lincolnshire.
We’ll actually begin our cycle tour in Nottinghamshire. We start from Retford, an attractive market town in the very north of the county and stay in the county throughout our first day as we make our way over to the historic market town of Newark-on-Trent on the east side of the county. Newark is a thriving market town and is perhaps best known for Newark Castle which played a key role in the English Civil War.
The following day, we leave Newark-on-Trent and cycle over to Lincoln. The city has been the beating heart of the county since Roman times and is a perfect base from which to explore. As we pedal around the city we will discover its steep cobbled streets, beautiful cathedral and medieval buildings.
From Lincoln, we will cycle to Louth, a beautiful Georgian market town set in the heart of the Lincolnshire Wolds. We will then take in the rolling hills of the Wolds on our way out to the seafront at Cleethorpes. Finally, we finish off our mini tour at Barnetby le Wold, a small rural village and civil parish in North Lincolnshire.
