A trip through Olde England
We had enjoyed a great time in Bournemouth, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the family. However all good things come to an end, and now it was time to return to Stockport.
We decided to stop off at Salisbury on the journey home. However having experienced rain each day while on the south coast we decided to simply be tourists and take a quick look around a few places – Salisbury Cathedral, Old Sarum and Stonehenge.
The official title of Salisbury Cathedral is The Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Salisbury. It is home to Britain”s tallest spire, the world”s best preserved original Magna Carta and Europe”s oldest working clock.
The cathedral is a fantastically ornate and spiritual building. Built in the 13th century it is a place of history, but also a living place of worship and prayer.
After the cathedral we headed a few miles north to Old Sarum. Moving further back in time this was the site 5000 years ago of an Iron Age hill fort and the old city of Salisbury.
At the side of the old hill fort are the remains of a ‘hidden’ cathedral.
Old Sarum is also the site where the Ordnance Survey began its first mapping of England.
The last of the places we visited was Stonehenge. A step even further back in time we will probably never know whether this was a place of sun worship, of healing, or a burial site.
And so it was time to head for home. We had enjoyed a fantastic few days in the south of England. We had been shown wonderful hospitality and seen some wonderful places. It had all passed by far too quick!
