Hebridean Way Day 1 – Castlebay to Lochboisdale

Hebridean Way Day 1 – Castlebay to Lochboisdale

After spending a day getting to the Outer Hebrides, finally, the time had come to do some cycling. Hebridean Day 1 would see us take in the first three islands of our tour. It was a cool morning.

So, leaving Castlebay, we set off towards the island of Vatersay.

Immediately, we were greeted with the sparseness of the population and the homes on these islands.

The scenery is immediately fantastic.

We crossed the causeway onto Vatersay.

The start of route 780, the one which the Hebridean Way follows is nothing spectacular. It actually starts at the southern end of the road through the village of Vatersay. However, there is nothing there.

The Hebridean Way itself starts across the road from Vatersay Hall Cafe.

We were fortunate in that the day we arrived was the cafe’s opening day for the season.

However, since we arrived before it opened, Sarah and I took a walk over to the beach.

It was just as superb as the images we had seen before arriving on the island. In fact, for a little while, Sarah and I were the only ones on the beach. Fabulous!

When the cafe opened we enjoyed a morning cuppa and a snack.

After the fabulous start, we now headed back towards Castlebay.

However, before arriving at Castlebay, this time we turned left and made our way to Barra beach just past Tangasdale.

From there, we cycled on towards Ardmhor Ferry Port.

We arrived early at the port so we went for a look around.

The drinks were served in the cabin above. However, the food was served from the truck below. And tasty it was too!

Eventually, the ferry arrived and we settled down for the 40-minute journey.

Our third island of the day was Eriskay.

Followed by our fourth island of the day after crossing the causeway onto South Uist.

We cycled around the edge of the island towards Dalisburgh.

Then took a right turn off the Hebridean Way route towards Lochboisdale.

For on the edge of the district, was our overnight accommodation, Riverside Cottage.

For our evening meal, we cycled into the village itself.

Here, we enjoyed a fine evening meal at Lochboisdale Hotel.

Finally, it was time to head back to our accommodation.

We cycled a total of 25 miles today, and it had been a marvellous introduction to cycling on the islands, with some fantastic scenery.
