Two castles – Gight and Fyvie

Two castles – Gight and Fyvie

Following the long walk on our first day with Clive and Sally we agreed that in order to give my feet a rest today would be a bit of sightseeing. I like sightseeing! So we set off for Fyvie and Methlick.

Ghit Castle

After leaving the car we set off on a path down towards some woods. To do so we needed to cross a field of cattle and there it was – Gight Castle. It may now just be ruin covered with ivy but it was once the home of the Gordon’s,and has quite a notorious history apparently. We then continued our walk into Gight Woods, a well-preserved ancient woodland nature reserve.

Guinness wants to play, we just want to eat!

After lunch we moved on to Fyvie Castle, one of National Trust for Scotland‘s properties.

This picturesque building dates back to the 13th century, though it is much changed and most of what you now see dates to the Victorian era.

A well earned cup of tea and some cake finished the visit off nicely before heading back home. We had still managed to walk a further 5 miles. We stopped off on the way back  for one final bit of sightseeing.

Loanhead of Daviot Stone Circle

This is the Loanhead of Daviot Stone Circle one of a number Recumbent Stone Circles that are found mainly in Aberdeenshire. There is a flat Recumbent Stone flanked by two tall stones. The other stones in the circle then get smaller the further they are from the Recumbent Stone. It isn’t known what purpose they served though links to sacrificial altars and astronomy is usually speculated.

Echt Tandoori Restaurant

In the evening we enjoyed a meal at Echt Tandoori Restaurant. My photo sadly doesn’t do it justice. Situated in a small village seemingly in the middle of nowhere, this was a wonderful and extremely busy place. It capped off a fantastic few days that were over far too quick. Thank you to Clive, Sally and Guinness for being perfect hosts. They presented us with a brief taste of what Aberdeenshire has to offer and we certainly want to come back.
