Reivers Route Day 5 – Carlisle to Cockermouth
On Reivers Route Day 5 we had to start the day a little slower than normal to allow the bike shop time to finish fixing my bike (a new spoke and then straightening up the back wheel).
Our way out of Carlisle was a familiar route to us as we had used it before.
We hadn’t got too far when I had another little problem. The mount for my Garmin came loose and my Garmin suddenly swing down and was dangling below my handlebars!
Having fixed it, we continued on towards Dalston.
The climbing soon started.
Soon the mist started to come down and although it was still about 20 degrees, it was rather misty and very close.
We passed through Hesket Newmarket
There was a really steep climb just before lunch.
Our lunch stop was a little off route in a place called Caldbeck.
Lunch was at the Waterfall Cafe in Caldbeck, which also had a craft cooperative shop next to it.
There were some free range chickens in the cafe garden.
After lunch we pushed our bikes along the beck, past the Church to the village car park.
Back on our bikes, we cycled back out of Caldbeck and rejoined the route, straight up a series of hills.
As we reached the fells, down came the rain! It was quite hard for a while.
It threatened to brighten up a couple of times but then the rain got heavier again!
It had almost stopped raining when we spotted Over Water.
The route continued on towards Bassenthwaite.
Even the cows were sheltering from the rain.
As we passed the first sign for Cockermouth, the rain had stopped.
We stopped on the bridge over the River Derwent to shed our raincoats.
It was then uphill yet again, although we were a little held up by the local rush hour.
There were still a few ‘one last hills’ as we headed into Cockermouth.
Cycling through the centre of Cockermouth we reach The Manor House Hotel which was our stop for the night.
We went to the Tarantella (local Italian restaurant) for a really nice meal. We had to celebrate our last night of the tour.
Today we had cycled 36 miles and had climbed about 2500 feet during the day.
