Morecambe Long – SCCC Lancaster Club Weekend

Morecambe Long – SCCC Lancaster Club Weekend

After a successful Saturday cycle ride out to Knott End followed by an enjoyable evening meal at Lancaster University, Stockport Community Cycling Club riders on the club weekend were now treated to a cycle ride out to Morecambe. I was leading one of the rides

Disclaimer: Most of the photos in this post were taken from the ride I was leading. However, it is difficult leading a cycle ride while at the same time trying to take photos. Inevitably there were gaps. Sarah wasn’t available either. So, to complete the story of this ride I have borrowed a few of the photos taken when recceing the route in August.

Leaving the university we headed out through the Scotforth area of Lancaster.

After a few miles we joined Lancaster Canal.

This soon brought us into the centre of Lancaster.

We left the canal and weaved our way through the city centre.

A little further on we joined NCN Route 69. This path runs alongside the River Lune.

We followed the path for a few miles before crossing the river at Halton Bridge. Here we also joined local cycle route 90.

This road took us out of Lancaster and up the main climb of the day.

There were some excellent views at the top out across the Lune Valley.

After turning into Kellet Lane, we headed towards Nether Kellet.

We go our first glimpse of Morecambe Bay when leaving Nether Kellet.

From Nether Kellet, we dropped down towards Carnforth. Unfortunately, Helen, on of our riders, took a tumble here. The ache she felt in her wrist she put down to bruising, but it turned out later to be a fracture!

Continuing to follow Local Route 90, and a little further on NCN Route 6, we weaved our way alongside the River Keer. We then turned towards Morecambe by rejoining the Lancaster Canal.

We followed the canal for the next five miles.

Eventually, we left the canal at Hest Bank.

Then dropped down onto Morecambe esplanade.

We cycled along the seafront for the next few miles.

Upon reaching the main shore area we stopped for lunch. It was good timing too, for we met the other groups here too.

After lunch we headed out of Morecambe and back to Lancaster.

We crossed the Millennium Bridge and then cycled out along the old railway track to Glasson Dock. It is a path we have cycled along many times, including to reach the finish of the Bay Cycle Way.

What we haven’t done previously, however, is cycle through Glasson Dock and take a peek at the views out from the other side of the town.

Finally, we made our way back to the university, which included a few ‘punchy’ little climbs.

Today, we had cycled nearly 36 miles through a variety of interesting and enjoyable scenery. You can view our Morecambe route below:
