Bay Cycle Way Day 2 – Ulverston to Arnside

Bay Cycle Way Day 2 – Ulverston to Arnside

After enjoying a relatively straightforward, if a bit wet, day of cycling on Bay Cycle Day 1, our second-day cycling to Arnside promised to be a tougher challenge … though hopefully, dryer.

First of all, however, we had a hill to climb.

Sarah had spotted a lighthouse on top of a hill when we had passed through Ulverston on our South Lakes Safari Zoo trip. It had to be climbed.

We had all day. So after breakfast the four of us set off for a walk up a hill, Hoad hill.

No point in taking the easy route, the shortcut was straight up.

The monument itself is the Hoad Monument, also known as the Sir John Barrow monument. It was built in 1850.

The views from the top, out over Ulverston and Morecambe bay were absolutely breathtaking.

Having enjoyed a walk up a hill, it was time to do a bit of cycling.

And straight out of Ulverston we headed up Hoad hill again, but this time, on our bikes.

The next hill was Greenodd hill.

A little further on we crossed the River Leven.

The major climb of this cycling tour was cycling up Bigland hill. It was certainly a cheek blower.

Then it was down the hill and on towards Cartmel.

Past Cartmel racecourse.

And into the home of sticky toffee pudding.

Oh … and Cartmel Priory.

After Cartmel, we cycled through Flookburgh.

Followed by another naughty and challenging little hill!

Then on towards Grange-over-Sands.

In Grange-over-Sands we stopped for some lunch at the Promenade Cafe.

After lunch, we headed back along the promenade and around the bay.

Then after leaving the coast we made our way around the Milnthorpe Sands estuary.

We stopped off for a short break in the village of Levens.

Finally, there was a cycle ride straight into the headwind along the Lancashire coast.

Our destination was Ye Olde Fighting Cocks at Arnside.

Then after booking in, it was time for the ‘perfect pint’ … while admiring a cracking view.

Day 2 of our Bay Cycle Way tour had presented a more challenging route, not helped by cycling into a strong headwind at certain stages. That said, it had been another brilliant day of cycling, passing through some lovely villages, and looking out over some cracking views.
