Lincolnshire Lost Lanes Day 2 – Newark-on-Trent to Lincoln
Following an enjoyable first cycle touring day, Lincolnshire Lost Lanes Day 2 would take us from Newark-on-Trent to the city of Lincoln.
First, we went into the town centre for breakfast …
Fuelled up, we returned to our overnight accommodation.
Our route for the day by returning past Newark Castle.
After passing through Riverside Park we continued to follow the path alongside the River Trent.
Before joining NCN Route 64 at North Gate.
We would follow NCN Route 64 all day. This took us through Winthorpe.
Then a few miles further on we cycled through Collingham.
Followed by South Scarle.
The next village on our route was Eagle.
At Harby, we joined the old railway line that would take us through Skellingthorpe.
At the far end of the railway path, we joined Foss Dyke.
This took us into the centre of Lincoln.
It was followed by the climb up to the old part of the city where we found the fine Bailgate Deli.
In the afternoon we decided to visit Lincoln Cathedral.
Its official name is the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln.
We joined in with one of the tours.
We heard how the construction of the cathedral began in 1072 and it was built in the early Gothic style.
There are quite a few carvings known as ‘Lincoln Imps’, of which there are quite a few legends, including being sent by Satan to do evil work on Earth.
The Cathedral has been continually updated and when you know where to look it helps tell the fascinating story of the development of Christianity throughout the region.
After leaving the Cathedral, we walked over to our accommodation, which was practically next door on Exchequergate, in the historic Cathedral quarter of Lincoln.
Then in the evening, we walked over to Gino’s Pizzeria Restaurant on Bailgate and enjoyed another fine evening meal. We were eating well!
For our Lincolnshire Lost Lanes Day 2, we had only cycled 25 easy miles today. It had, however, given us the time and opportunity to visit Lincoln Cathedral, and this had certainly been well worthwhile. Indeed, it had made for another great day of cycle touring. Tomorrow we are off to Louth.
