Timperley – a cycle ride cut short
Stockport Community Cycling Club riders met at Gatley Rail Station for this cycle ride out to Timperley. Sarah would be leading the group and I was the back leader. It was a fine morning. Yes, we could still cycle in short-sleeved gear!
So, we began by setting off down Northenden Road.
Then we turned into Longley Lane.
Leaving Longley Lane, we took a shortcut up Beech Avenue. This took us through to Northenden.
When we reached Northenden we joined National Cycle Network Route 62.
We followed this up Kenworthy Lane towards Princess Parkway.
Following NCN Route 62 took us on to the path alongside the River Mersey.
After following the path for a mile or so we crossed the river at Jackson’s Bridge.
Here we joined Rifle Road and cycled towards Sale.
Unfortunately on the roundabout at the end of Rifle Road and an entry lane onto the M60, we witnessed a car taking out a cyclist (not one from our group). Fortunately, he wasn’t seriously hurt, but he was seriously shaken and concussed. Our group stayed with the cyclist while police, ambulance, wife etc were called. We only left when his wife bundled him into her car and took him to A&E.
To be frank the whole group was shaken. So we decided to cut the ride short and miss out on the Timperley section.
Instead, we navigated our way through Northern Moor towards Wythenshawe Park.
When reaching Wythenshawe Park we picked up the path alongside Wythenshawe Road.
We then headed into the park.
Where we all took a break and regathered ourselves.
Afterwards, we made our way through the park.
Then we joined Altrincham Road.
Before turning into Leestone Road.
Finally, we cycled back up Longley Lane.
Our ride had only covered just under 10 miles. It had, however, for the wrong reasons, been a dramatic one. I am pleased to say I received a phone call later in the evening from the cyclist who had been knocked off his bike, saying he was ok and thanking the group for the attention and support he had been given.
