Tarn Hows Walk

Tarn Hows Walk

For the Coniston 14 running event, Sarah and I, along with Tracey and Dan, had booked to also stay in Coniston village the night after the event too. The following morning we arranged to join up for a walk up to Tarn Hows.

We left Coniston village following the route of the Cumbrian Way. This took a left turn into Shepherd’s Bridge Lane. Then, after a hundred yards or so, it picked up a path on the right and crossed Yewdale Beck.

Following the path, we passed Marshall’s Kennel, a posh place for keeping Foxhounds in Victorian times.

This then took us on towards Low Yewdale.

The path climbed gently through gorse and trees.

Keeping to the edge of the field, next we swung round to a gate at the southwest corner of Tarn Hows Wood.

Once through the gate, we followed the path as it briefly passed alongside Yewdale Beck.

Before climbing more steeply through the woods.

Some of the views up here were spectacular.

After following a gravelled track for a while we joined a tarmacked road that took us around Tarn Hows Intake and up to Tarn Hows.

Much of this land is National Trust owned, and up around the tarn, they keep a breed of cows called Belted Galloways.

We continued to follow the Cumbrian Way as it traced the western side of the tarn.

Nearing halfway round, it was time for replenishments.

Soon, we were back on our way.

The Cumbrian Way walking route continues to head north. However, we followed the path all the way around the tarn.

On the eastern side of the lake, the views were even more breathtaking.

Leaving the tarn, we made our way around the edge of the visitor car park and dropped down through Hill Fell Plantation.

Then, continuing to make our way down the hill we followed the path alongside School Beck.

This brought us out onto the B5285. Tracey is just checking we are on course …

We then followed the path alongside the road.

It eventually brought us to the head of Coniston Water.

Finally, we followed the B5285 back to Coniston village.

This had been a fabulous walk with some fantastic scenery to enjoy along the way. We had walked some 7 miles and the weather had been great. All-in-all, a fabulous day. It was, however, now time to leave Coniston and head back home.
