Pennine Cycleway Day 4 – Alston to Orton

Pennine Cycleway – Day 4 took us from Alston to Orton. We had stayed overnight at the Youth Hostel in Alston. They have red squirrels in the trees behind the hostel. The first climb of the day took us to the summit of Hartside.     At the summit,  there is a cafe which does excellent cake! The climb was followed by a good long downhill. Pennine Cycleway Day 3 – Bellingham to Alston

Pennine Cycleway Day 3 – Bellingham to Alston

Today on Pennine Cycleway – Day 3 we cycled from Bellingham to Alston. Bellingham Bunkhouse was a good place to stay. The ride started with a big climb – a theme for the day! And then on to Greystoke.    Here we decided to stop off for a cuppa at the Greystoke Cycling Café again. With its gluten-free bread it had been one of the highlights on our  previous visit on our End-to-End. Then we cycled through Penrith and Langwathby,  before stopping for…

C2C Day 3 – Alston to Consett

Bank holiday Monday was our C2C Day 3. It was always going to be a tough day as there were three big hills to be climbed. As we left Highfield’s B&B in Alston, it was already warm and sunny. We followed the NCN route 68 back to Leadgate where we picked up route 7 again. Then climbed for a while before dropping down into Garrigill. As we left Garrigill, there was a short but very steep climb – which I…
