Stalybridge via Ashton-Under-Lyne
Another warm Sunday greeted us as we arrived on Hollywood Bridge near to Stockport Pyramid for this cycle ride out to Stalybridge. Andy S had put this one together for us.
We set off alongside the River Mersey following NCN Route 62.
This section is also part of the Trans Pennine Trail.
We cycled towards Didsbury.
At East Didsbury, we headed up Burnage Lane.
Before picking up the Fallowfield Loop, part of NCN Route 60.
However, while NCN Route 60 heads off to Gorton, we stayed on the Loop until the end at Fairfield.
We then made our way over to the Ashton Canal.
After leaving the Ashton Canal at Guide Bridge, we weaved our way through the back streets of Ashton-under-Lyne.
Then from Ashton-under-Lyne we cycled on towards Stalybridge.
We had a quick peak at the town centre before moving on.
This included a climb up Stocks Lane, a cheek blower, and the first of our two climbs of the day.
From Stalybridge, we made our way on towards Mottram and Hattersley and our second climb of the day.
We were already some of the way up Werneth Low when we tried the visitor centre. It was, however, closed.
So, onwards and upwards until we reached the ridge.
Here, we took a break.
The views are always fantastic looking out from Werneth Low.
From Werneth Low, it was a steady downhill, beginning with making our way through Woodley.
Before reaching Stockport town centre.
Finally, we re-joined the Trans Pennine Trail again on our way back to where our cycle ride had begun.
We had covered 26 miles on this cycle route. This had been another interesting cycle ride along roads we don’t visit too often, and as always we had enjoyed both the scenery and the company.
