Scottish Borders Day 4 – Kelso to Berwick-Upon-Tweed
Scottish Borders Day 4 was the final day of our coast-to-coast cycle ride. We started the day in Kelso. We were staying at Duncan House.
After a leisurely and enjoyable breakfast, we set off in the direction of Floors Castle. It was an overcast morning, windy, and with the promise of some light showers.
We soon joined NCN Route 1. This section of Route 1 we have cycled previously, in the opposite direction, on the Coast and Castles South tour. This took us past Kelso Racecourse.
We then headed towards Ednam.
Then on towards Eccles. It almost felt like being back in Manchester … almost … just not as many cars, and the scenery was a bit better in these parts.
About ten miles into the ride and I started hearing a clicking sound against the mudguard. Further inspection and I found a large thorn firmly embedded into the tyre. It wasn’t going down, however, so I decided to carry on.
This got us a few more miles further on, but an inner-tube replacement was inevitable. And it was just at the time of day when the winds were strong and the weather a little squally.
Anyway, we were soon back on our way.
Of course, with the wind behind us, and the autumn colours all around, it was fantastic cycling.
Just before Norham, we re-entered England, again.
We stopped off for a fine Sunday lunch at The Mason Arms in Norham.
After the hearty lunch, we struggled up the hill to Norham Castle.
Officially, it was closed (out of season). However, we managed to sneak in for a quick peek!
Between Norham and Berwick-Upon-Tweed NCN Route 1 is also joined by NCN Route 68, which of course forms the Pennine Cycleway.
Our route took us over the River Tweed again at Union Suspension Bridge. Another border crossing point!
There was one final border crossing.
Eventually, we reached the outskirts of Berwick-Upon-Tweed.
We dropped down into the town, passing through the castle walls.
We took our obligatory coastal photo. Not as easy as it sounds with the strong winds blowing around us.
We were staying at YHA Berwick.
After a welcome cup of tea, even though Sarah was struggling a bit healthwise, we took a journey down to the pier. She had heard there were dolphins there. We didn’t see any, but we did get blown around somewhat!
We finished off with a well-earned Italian meal at Limoncello.
Today we had cycled nearly 33 miles. This brought to an end a fabulous four days of cycling. We had both thoroughly enjoyed our tour and can heartily recommend a Scottish Borders tour.
