Scarborough – A Club Weekend Sneek Peek
With the Stockport Community Cycling Club weekend rapidly approaching Andy S and I decided a visit to Scarborough was in order. We need to recce the Sunday longer ride, and this blog post gives you a sneek peek of that ride.
We stayed at Scarborough YHA, a delightful light place located in Scalby on the edge of Scarborough. We arrived late on the Sunday evening and cycled in to town. The following morning, following a hearty breakfast, we were ready to go.
Leaving the youth hostel we picked up the club weekend route part-way round. So the first part of this sneek-peek will actually be the finishing section of the route on the club weekend itself. Got that? Good.
So for Andy and I the cycle ride began by dropping down to the Scarborough north shore and our first view of Scarborough castle.
We cycled along Marine Drive and around the headland to the south shore.
From here we climbed up to the esplanade. For a short while we are following NCN Route 1.
We continued climbing to the Hull University campus at Scarborough. It is here where SCCC will be staying whilst in Scarborough. So the finish of the ride will finish with a sting in the tail. Not to worry, we will have already fortified ourselves with an ice-cream on the seafront before that climb!
For Andy and I however we continued along Filey Road.
And on to Cayton, the home of the Stained Glass Centre.
This was quite early in our cycle ride so we just stopped for a cream tea and a scone. On the club weekend ride however this will be the lunch stop. And it’s a great place to have lunch as you can see from the photos.
After our break we continued on to Filey.
From Filey we cycle through the golf course and make our way towards Hummanby.
At Hummanby we turn towards Fordonand head through a valley. The scenery here is spectacular.
At Fordon we begin climbing.
The fantastic scenery however just keeps on coming.
We then drop down through Flixton – not the Manchester version – and Folkton and make our way back towards Cayton. Which of course will be the lunch stop on club weekend!
Andy and I continued cycling however. We made our way through Seamer and East Ayton. This section is along a busy road, so it was a case of head down and get it over with as soon as possible. At East Ayton thankfully we turned off the main road and entered the North York Moors.
Finally we took a short break at Throxenby Mere.
Then it was back to the youth hostel to finish our day. Andy and I had cycled just under 40 miles and climbed approximately 2000 feet. For both of us this had proved a challenging yet thoroughly enjoyable cycle ride. We hope that those joining us when we repeat the ride on the club weekend will find it just as rewarding.
