Ravens Route Day 3 – Keswick to Appleby-in-Westmorland
Monday was Ravens Route Day 3. We left our B&B and cycled into the centre of Keswick and then headed out into the old railway line.
After a couple of miles, we had to divert off the old railway line as it was closed. During the 2015 floods the bridges, we damaged and haven’t been restored as yet.
We climbed up to the Castlerigg stone circle.
We then continued along the Sea-to-Sea (C2C) alternative route towards Threlkeld.
We made our way to Greystoke for a morning break.
We had a great cuppa and cake at the Greystoke Cycle Cafe, which is a great place.
After our refreshments, we continued following the Sea-to-Sea (C2C) route to Newton Rigg Agricultural College (We had been there in the past for an SCCC Weekend).
We turned off the Sea-to-Sea (C2C) route and picked up NCN Route 71 for a while, passing Brougham Castle.
We stopped at Morland were we had hoped to get some lunch, unfortunately everywhere was closed! Andy Shaw had to spend time fixing Ian’s bike – his spokes were loose, making his wheel buckled and causing his brakes to stick on.
We left Morland, Ian’s bike now working much better, and continued on towards Appleby-in-Westmorland.
The was a section where the road was a Ford, which was closed but fortunately the cycle route crossed over a small bridge at the side.
Having crossed the bridge, there was a really sneaky climb on the other side.
We reached Appleby-in-Westmorland, cycled through the centre and on to the Royal Oak, where we were staying for the night.
We had a nice meal at the pub and then watched the football.
It hadn’t been the longest day but there had been a fair bit of climbing. The weather had been very kind to us.
We had cycled almost 38 miles and climbed about 3000 feet.
