Morecambe Long – SCCC Lancaster Club Weekend Sneek-Peek
Yesterday, on our Knott End cycle ride we were dodging the rain. Thankfully, for the second of our SCCC Weekend sneek-peek rides, the forecast today was better. For our Morecambe Long cycle ride, we would just have to battle with the wind.
Leaving the university campus, we started by heading down towards Lancaster.
A couple of miles into the ride we joined the Lancaster Canal.
This brought us into the city centre.
Then, after quickly getting back onto the canal again, we cycled through the city.
Before leaving the canal and joined NCN Route 69 as it followed the River Lune.
We have cycled along this route many times before, including on our Way of the Roses and End-to-End (LEJOG) tours.
We passed under the Lune Aquaduct (and later in the day we would cycle over it!).
Further on, we crossed the River Lune at Halton Bridge.
Now following local network route 90, after leaving the river, we climbed the big hill of the day … well, not exactly big …
… but it was a hill, and it did offer a great view at the top.
Our route then took us through Nether Kellet and towards Carnforth.
Again, we arrived on a route we have enjoyed cycling before. This time it was the Bay Cycle Way. We would follow this route all the way to Glasson Dock.
At Carnforth, we joined NCN Route 6, and rejoined the Lancaster Canal.
Following the canal brought us into Hest Bank and Morecambe.
Then, after leaving the canal, we dropped down to the coast and popped into Jo N Lees Cafe for lunch.
In truth, while this was a perfectly decent cafe, and we enjoyed the food, we later decided that on the club weekend it would be more convenient to stop in Morecambe for lunch.
After lunch, we cycled along the promenade to the town centre.
At the end of the promenade is the official start of the Way of the Roses. Here, we left the coast and followed this route back to Lancaster.
Then, after crossing over the Millenium Bridge, we left NCN Route 69 and Lancaster again, and headed out towards Glasson Dock.
Previously, we had only ever touched the outskirts of Glasson Dock. This time, however, we headed for the town centre.
At the far end of the town there is a sneaky hill.
At the top of this little hill there are some fine views looking out towards the Lake District.
Finally, however, it was time to head back to the university.
Today, we had cycled nearly 37 miles. You can view our Morecambe Long route below:
