Lancaster – An SCCC Weekend Ride
The Stockport Community Cycling Club Weekend is always a highly anticipated event. This year we were off to Penrith. Some of us had recently spent a weekend recceing the Sunday rides (Short ride/Long ride). First however, on the way we stopped off for a cycle ride near to Lancaster.
We arrived in Lancaster on a wet Saturday lunchtime.
Setting off along the River Lune we followed NCN Route 6 for the first few miles.
This took us past Conder Green where we stopped briefly for a group photo on the bridge across the River Conder.
We followed an offshoot of the NCN Route 6 path to its end at Glasson Dock.
Here we stopped at the Dalton Arms. It was a bit chaotic at times (hardly surprising since there were nearly 30 of us!), however the staff were friendly and welcoming, and the food was fine.
After lunch we split into two groups. I led the second the group, with Sarah as the back-leader. On the road again and the climbing started … almost from the back of the pub as we climbed up Bodie Hill.
Next we headed towards Lower Thurnham.
And then we picked up NCN Route 6 again and headed for Galgate.
Travelling along Burrow Road (which connects Galgate and Lancaster) we unfortunately came across an overturned car. The police allowed us to pass, however it created quite a queue of car drivers unsure what to do.
These were narrow roads so after turning towards Stodday we decided to take a short break to allow a back-log of cars to pass. And while waiting, the farmer who owned the property alongside which we stopped came out and offered us beakers of water!
After the short break we cycled through Aldcliffe.
Finally we dropped back into Lancaster.
We arrived back having completed 16 miles. In spite of the rain this had been an adventurous ride. You can view our Lancaster route below:
Next it was time to move on and head for Newton Rigg where we would enjoy an enjoyable evening meal and a relaxing time.
