Hebridean Way Day 3 – Bayhead to Berneray
Hebridean Way Day 2 had appeared straightforward but the strong headwind had made it a challenge. It would be more of the same for Hebridean Way Day 3. At least the distance was shorter – that would surely help?
At least it started ok. We began by cycling westerly towards Balranald Nature Reserve.
Followed by Baranald Bay.
Soon after, however, we turned northerly again and back into the strong headwinds.
It also started to rain.
Which made it tough going as we made our way through the hardy landscape.
There were still the fantastic beaches of course.
Just before we reached the village of Struan we came across The Cottage Kitchen pop-up trailer.
The brew brought welcome relief.
Soon we were back on the road again. We passed Solas Cooperative and purchased some food for lunch.
While it wasn’t raining hard, along with the headwind, it meant we were both wet and cold.
Apart from the sea around the islands, it was noticeable just how many tarns and lakes there are on the islands.
At one of the tarns, we came across Dun An Sticir, the site of an Iron Age broch.
It once was the site of a great circular drystone tower house, which functioned as a well-defended family residence.
A few miles further on we reached the causeway that would take us onto the island of Berneray.
The winds made this a tough causeway to cross.
On arriving on the island we headed over to Berneray Shop & Bistro to recover and eat.
Afterwards, we made our way over to our accommodation, Brightwater B&B. Then later returned to the bistro for our evening meal.
Following our evening meal, we went for a short walk.
It was lovely and peaceful. Sometimes island life has its moments.
