Coniston 14
The weather forecast was fine and favourable when Sarah and I arrived in Coniston. We were preparing for Sarah and some of her Viaduct Fitness colleagues to run the Coniston 14 race the following day.
We were staying at The Sun Hotel. This was just a few minutes away from the village centre.
We had endured a long and tiring journey to get to Coniston. So, Sarah, Sharron (who had followed us up) and I, immediately headed down to Coniston Water.
By the water is The Bluebird Cafe. It was a fine place for something to eat and drink. It is, of course, named after the jet hydroplane made famous by Donald Campbell. Many of his water speed records, and later untimely death, took place on Coniston Water.
In the evening, the rest of the Viaduct Fitness team arrived. We all enjoyed an evening meal together before heading off for a good night’s sleep.
The following morning was even warmer than the previous day. Sarah and Sharron made their way down to the start near the water.
Then they were off … a journey of 14 miles of running around Coniston Water lay ahead.
In the meantime, Nicholl, who had come along to support Neil, Dan, who was here to support Tracey, and I, decided on the more leisurely pursuit. We took a boat cruise around the water.
It was a lovely peaceful trip in some fine surroundings.
Once back on the dry ground, we headed for a cafe in the village. Here we awaited the return of the runners.
Eventually, it was time to head back down towards the shore ready for our intrepid runners’ return. They would even be serenaded by BLAST Furness, a local band.
First back was Neil …
Followed by Tracey …
Then Sarah, who had struggled with cramps in the latter stages of her run …
And finally, Sharron, who stormed down the finishing straight.
In conditions not ideal for running, all had run fine races and could be proud of themselves.
Finally, as a way of celebrating, and also to wind down, we enjoyed lunch together at Meadowdore Cafe.
This had been a fine running event. The conditions had made it challenging, as shown by Sarah struggling with cramps. That said, all the runners had made it round and were pleased to have taken part. Those not running were equally pleased to have been there too!
