Clyde to Forth Day 4 – Grangemouth to Edinburgh

Clyde to Forth Day 4 – Grangemouth to Edinburgh

Our Forth to Clyde Day 3 had taken us from Glasgow to Grangemouth. The final part of our journey, Forth to Clyde Day 4, would see us cycle from Grangemouth to Edinburgh, finishing at Leith on the Firth of Forth.

It was a cool and pleasant morning when we left Grangemouth.

We began by cycling through another section of The Helix.

Then on into Falkirk town centre and our breakfast.

Breakfast downed, we set off again through Falkirk.

Back to the Union Canal.

Upon rejoining the Union Canal we picked up NCN Route 754 again.

Today, was the day of crossing aqueducts – the first of which was the Avon Aqueduct. This, appropriately carries the Union Canal over the River Avon. It is the second largest in the UK, and the largest in Britain.

A little further on, at Linlithgow, we had a good view out to Linlithgow Palace.

We occasionally had to be careful when passing local traffic …

Lunchtime was spent at Dotty’s Cafe in Broxburn. It was … ok.

Back on the Union Canal, we continued on towards Edinburgh.

Our next aqueduct was the Almond Aqueduct, also known as Lin’s Mill Aqueduct.

Then a little further on we reached the village of Ratho.

The next aqueduct was the Scott Russell aqueduct.

While our final aqueduct of the day was the Slatesford aqueduct … at least, I think that was the order of the aqueducts!

Then, we were reaching the outskirts of Edinburgh.

At the end of the Union Canal we crossed over the Leamington Lift Bridge.

After leaving the canal we followed NCN Route 75 through the centre of Edinburgh.

This took us through The Meadows.

Then on through the city centre.

Before joining Warriston Path. This was previously a railway track on the Edinburgh, Leith and Newhaven Railway.

From there we followed the Water of Leith.

Which brought us into the district of Leith.

Finally, we reached our destination, Leith waterfront. Amazingly, last time we cycled this route, we didn’t actually see the coast!

This time, we had our photo taken beside the lighthouse at the end of Leith Pier.

We had cycled 42 miles today and completed our Forth to Clyde cycle tour. It had provided a fine finish to our short coast-to-coast tour.

In the evening we walked over to the Kezban Mediterranean Restaurant for a celebratory meal Here we were joined by a couple of Mikes good friends. It was an excellent way to finish the tour!
