Anglo-Scottish Border Day 5 – Beal to Berwick-upon-Tweed

Anglo-Scottish Border Day 5 – Beal to Berwick-upon-Tweed

We had finished Anglo-Scottish Border Day 4 at Beal. Anglo-Scottish Day 5 would be our final day of cycling. Our aim was to pop over to Holy Island before cycling up the Northumberland coast and finishing at Berwick-upon-Tweed.

We left Lindisfarne Inn at Beal on a fine cloudy morning. We began by cycling down to the causeway which would take us over to Holy Island.

The road to Lindisfarne is roughly five miles long and we were fortunate today that there wasn’t too breezy on the way over.

On the island, we locked our bikes up in sight of the castle.

Then walked over to the southern shore.

We continued our little walk up to the war memorial and the lookout tower.

Observing below Lindisfarne Priory.

Of course, Lindisfarne Priory was the finishing point of St Cuthbert’s Way walk which Sarah and Neil completed in 2021.

Before leaving the island we decided to have a brew at Chare Ends café.

Then it was back on our bikes and back over the causeway.

It was a little windier on the return journey to the mainland but Neil kept us all well protected from the strongest elements of the headwind.

Back on the mainland we picked up NCN Route EV12 (formerly also NCN Route 1).

This took us over the dunes along the Northumberland coast.

Sadly, Sarah, who had picked up as the week had gone on was struggling today. However, she kept going.

We stopped briefly at Cocklawburn Beach.

Then found our path blocked by locals just before we reached Spittal …

Instead, we climbed the hill up through the village of Borewell in order to join the A1167. Along this road we found Marshalls Café. This unassuming place on the outskirts of Berwick-upon-Tweed provided us with some fantastic lunch.

While eating our lunch we noted the heavens opening and there was a brief downpour. We were glad we were inside at the time!

Thankfully, the downpour was brief and we were able to continue our journey into Berwick-upon-Tweed in the dry.

Our planned route was to take a diversion before reaching the town out to take in the Union Chain bridge that spans the River Tweed on the Anglo-Scottish border between Horncliffe, Northumberland, England and Fishwick, Berwickshire, Scotland.

However, we decided to sack that idea and cycle in to Berwick-upon-Tweed instead.

So we finished the afternoon in the beer garden at Kings Arms Hotel, where we were staying – very relaxing.

In the evening we went for a meal a celebratory meal at Magna Tandoori. We had visited this place a few years previously when on our Coast and Castles South tour and remembered enjoying the meal. To be frank, this time we’d say the experience it was only ‘ok’. The staff weren’t overly helpful, the restaurant had a really strong spicy atmosphere – enough to make us all cough when we entered – and the décor was a little tired. That said, the meal itself was fine.

Afterwards we finished our tour off in The Barrels.

This completed another fine cycling tour. Sadly, tomorrow we are off back home and back to real life …

We had cycled just under 22 miles today. That had been enough! You can view our Anglo-Scottish Border Day 5 route from Beal on to Holy Island and then to Berwick-upon-Tweed below:
