Colwyn Bay – A Second Day at the Seaside
Following on from our ride along the coast of North Wales yesterday, we tackled a different section today. We again were following the National Cycle route but the weather was not as nice today. We drove to Conwy and parked near the castle them headed out past the smallest house and then along the coast towards the Marina.
The route then basically follows the A55 with their being a cycle path which runs parallel or even in some sections on the pavement.
The path takes you round the edge of the headland while part of the road goes through a tunnel, then tooks us along the beach at Penmaenmawr.
From here there are some new(ish) cycling bridges.
Initially this takes you over the first carriageway and then along a quiet path between the two carriageways.
From there it takes you along some quiet roads.
When we reached a ford, the cycle route turns off and follows an old railway line.
The old railway line brought us out on the far side of Bangor Marina.
We followed the route which took us around the harbour to Bangor Pier.
By this time we were rather wet, starting to feel cold and a little miserable, so we walked down the Pier to the tea shop at the end and had a very welcome cuppa. Andy had a very nice looking piece of cake there (and said it was great!). The scones looked really good!
Because the weather was awful we decided to skip Caernarfon and head back to Conwy. The route back was basically the same, just in reverse
As we came round the headland, we could see a rainbow.
As we approached the outskirts of Conwy, we went a slightly different was and stopped to look at the Marina.
As we were looking at the boats, the weather took a turn for the worse and the rain became really heavy! We sheltered for a while in the hope that it would ease off but it didn’t! We arrived back at the car dripping wet! Thankfully we had a towel and change of clothes, so performed a quick change in the car – good job there weren’t lots of people about.
Feeling much drier (and warmer) we decided a cup of tea was required, so drove into Llandudno for a cuppa. As it had stopped raining we decided to buy a bag of chips and went and ate them on the Promenade, along with some tuna pasta salad we had bought from home.
We got back to the car just as the heavens opened again! Despite the weather, we actually had a great day. We cycled 36 miles with most of the outward journey being into a head wind.
