Tour De Stockport 2021
A few weeks ago we had used one of our regular Sunday cycle rides to recce this Tour De Stockport route. Now it was time to officially cycle the route on a Stockport Community Cycling Club ride.
We met near Woodsmoor Rail station on a bright Saturday morning. At the moment, for coronavirus social distancing reasons the club is keeping the numbers on the rides to a maximum of twelve.
Setting off, we weaved our way through Woodsmoor.
Then over the bridge at the end of Cromley Road.
Then through Bramhall.
We worked our way around the new cycle facilities near Bramhall Park.
Before cycling through the park and past Bramhall Hall.
After leaving the park we headed for Cheadle Hulme.
Where we picked up the Ladybrook Cycleway.
This brought us out onto Councillor Lane at Cheadle Heath. Here we joined NCN Route 558.
Still following NCN Route 558, a little further on we cycled up Cheadle Old Road and past Sykes Reservoir.
This brought us into Edgeley.
We worked our way down to Brinksway.
Passing the Pyramid. Here we joined NCN Route 62. The section through Stockport forms part of the Trans Pennine Trail.
Cycling under the M60 motorway.
Before heading up towards Heaton Norris.
After crossing the A6, we cycled through Heaton Norris Park.
We dropped down towards the town centre.
Then took the path under the motorway and reached the point where the rivers Tame, Goyt and Mersey meet.
Next, we navigated our way around the edge of the town centre.
This brought us out onto Newbridge Lane. We followed this for a while, crossing over St Mary’s Way along the way.
At the end of Newbridge Lane we briefly entered Vernon Park.
After leaving Vernon Park, we joined the new path heading into the back of Woodbank Park.
It’s a tidy little climb up to the main section of the park. So, we took a short break here.
Leaving the park we weaved our way through Offerton.
After crossing over Marple Road, we made our way through Offerton estate.
We passed this classic car on our journey. It was nearly as old as some of our cyclists!
From Offerton, we made our way on to Hazel Grove where we crossed over the A6 again and into Green Lane.
Finally, we crossed over Bramhall Moor Lane and into Barlow Road South. This took us into Mirrlees Fields.
When we arrived back we had cycled just over 15 miles. Everyone had enjoyed this route. This had been one of those routes that kept you guessing. You knew where you were … and then you didn’t … and then you knew where you were again and thought ‘I know where I am again. I just never knew that road brought us out here’.
