Anglo-Scottish Border Day 1 – Carlisle to Gretna to Newcastleton

Anglo-Scottish Border Day 1 – Carlisle to Gretna to Newcastleton

Finally, it had arrived our annual summer tour! The Anglo-Scottish Border route is a coast-to-coast cycle route starting from Carlisle, then cycling to Gretna, before following the border to Berwick-upon-Tweed. For Anglo-Scottish Border Day 1 we would just be making our way to Newcastleton. Last year, we experienced rail travel misery in reaching the start point of the tour. Thankfully, this year it was much more pleasant. We had agreed to cycle in two groups to reach our first destination,…

This St Cuthbert’s Way Coast-to-Coast Itinerary outlines a 200-mile coast-to-coast tour which Andy and I will be cycling in summer 2021. It is inspired by the St Cuthbert’s Way walk. It also takes inspiration from the Scottish Borders Coast-to-Coast which Sarah and I cycled a few years ago. St Cuthbert’s Way is a 62-mile long-distance walking route. It is one of the most beautiful, varied and enjoyable routes in Britain, and one of Scotland’s Great Trails. We have, therefore, created this…

Scottish Borders Day 1 – Carlisle to Gretna then Canonbie

Scottish Borders Day 1 – Carlisle to Gretna then Canonbie

Thursday was the first day of our honeymoon cycle tour, our Scottish Borders Day 1. We cycled from home to Stockport Station where we caught a train to Manchester and then an onward connection to Carlisle. The last time we were at Carlisle Station (on our Lochs and Glens South tour), they were still renovating it but that is all completed now. We stopped briefly at Costa just outside the station to grab some lunch. We used the lift near…
