Swallow Falls Walk – Welsh Water
We set off today for a few days away in Wales, to stay at Porthmadog to be exact. On the way there we stopped off at Betws-y-Coed to have a walk around. We had planned a circular walk which would take in Swallow Falls, which mapped out at just under 7 miles.
Having parked near the train station we set off through the town before crossing the river. There was so much water that the river was spectacular!
We then followed a footpath at the side of the river, initially being a boardwalk.
It then became a normal path, which followed the river. We went through fields as well as through woodland.
I found it suprising how green it was in certain places.
Further on we crossed over the river again. What we didn’t realise at the time was that the bridge was at the bottom of Swallow Falls.
Crossing over the road we went up the other side and followed the river but high up.
We past a large number of streams, all which were very full of water.
Following tracks, paths and roads through the woods.
There was still snow on the tops if the nearby hills.
Where the stream crossed the path, it was hard to cross.
Having made our way back down to the road, we crossed the river and followed the footpath back towards Betws-y-coed.
The path followed the river to the top of Swallow Falls.
We then continued down along the river back towards the car.
We ended up having walked just over 9 miles in total. It was a great afternoon out, although it was dark when we got back to the car! The weather was fine for most of the walk, although it did hail briefly whilst we were looking at Swallow Falls and also rained a little near the end. Considering the recent snow and freezing temperatures, we had a fabulous day!
