SCCC Astbury Ride

SCCC Astbury Ride

Stockport Community Cycling Club‘s long ride to Astbury was an excellent opportunity to get out on the bicycle again following the recent cold weather spell. Clearly, this was a view shared by others, since seventeen club members turned up at the start at Bramhall library.

Sarah and I had recced an upcoming ride the previous day and she had picked up two punctures! Then was just about to leave to the start of this long ride only to find out the bike had another. It meant a last minute dash to make the start. I was leading the ride and Sarah was the back leader.

The ride began by weaving our way through the streets of Bramhall towards Handforth.

From Handforth, we headed on towards Wilmslow.

In Wilmslow, we cycled through The Carrs.

Eventually, we left the urban streets and headed out into the country lanes towards Marthall.

Then on through Over Peover.

We stopped for a short break in Goostrey.

We picked up NCN Route 573 for a while.

Next, we joined NCN Route 71 and cycled through Swettenham. None of the club members was willing to tackle the ford, however. Hardly surprising, for after all the recent rain it did look quite a challenge.

We made our way through the grounds of Davenport Hall.

We then headed on to Brereton Heath.

Our lunch stop was at Astbury Meadow Garden Centre. We were greeted at the entrance by an unusual visitor.

Lynn with a new friend

It being Mother’s Day meant that in spite of lots of indoor seating, the only spare ones were outside. At least they provided gluten-free bread, enabling Sarah to enjoy soup and a sandwich.

After lunch, we began by following NCN Route 70 and skirting the edge of Congleton.

Then on towards Siddington.

There were some rather wet sections.

We cycled on towards Chelford.

And then on towards Alderley Edge.

Finally, we returned through Woodford.

Before arriving back in Bramhall having cycled just over 47 miles. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed the challenge.
