Roman Lakes and Lyme Park
This latest Covid-19 Sunday cycle ride route was put together this week by Andy S. It would take us out to Roman Lakes and Lyme Park. With Sarah returning, our little group had now grown to five.
We met at Torkington Park on a pleasant Sunday morning.
Leaving Torkington Park our route began by taking us up Torkington Old Road.
Then on to Hawk Green.
And into Marple down Lockside.
A little further on we turned down Lakes Road. This brought us to Roman Lakes.
The Roman Lakes and the area around it was once the location of Samuel Oldknow’s Mellor Mill. It was the lakes that provided the water for the mill. This was located within the grounds and the area is now known as the Roman Lakes. In 1892 Mellor Mill was destroyed by fire. After the fire, the Roman Lakes themselves were turned into a leisure park. While, following archaeological excavations, the whole area has been restored.
After looking around, it was time to move on.
We left by climbing up Old Hall Lane, which really is now just a gravel path.
We took a breather to recover at the top.
Then continued on through Mellor along Longhurst Lane.
After turning into Gibb Lane we picked up another path.
This took us through Mellor golf course.
Through Brookbottom.
And towards New Mills.
This time, we didn’t stop in New Mills.
Instead, we continued on towards Disley.
From Disley, we entered a side gate into Lyme Park.
After cycling up the entry road, we stopped off for a cup of tea.
Then it was out through the back door.
We hadn’t reached the back door, however, when the two Andy S’s decided to take a short detour. They decided to go and have a quick look at the MTB trails in The Knott.
The rest of us waited until they came back down.
We then continued down another rocky path to the Lyme Park back door.
From Lyme Park we made our way through Poynton.
Then back into Stockport, and back to Torkington Park.
This had been a challenging route, and yet again, another fantastic little tour of Stockport and its surrounding area.
