Ride to Portland Basin
Saturday was the Stockport Community Cycling Club AGM followed by a ride from Woodley up to the Portland Basin and back. The AGM was held at Stockport Sports Village in Woodley, so that is where the ride started. There were 8 of us who went on the ride.
We set off down towards the River Tame and went down the valley along side it.
We then progressed through Haugton Dale
We came off the trail and walked up the steps to the Peak Forest canal.
We then followed the Peak Forest Canal up to the Portland Basin.
At times we had to come off the canal, cross over it and then get back on the canal path again.
The Portland Basin is the former Ashton Canal Warehouse at the junction of the Peak Forest Canal and the Ashton Canal.
The Ashton Canal Warehouse now contains a museum and a cafe.
We briefly walked through the museum to get to the cafe.
After some refreshments, we set off again to make our way back to where we originally started,
This time we followed the Ashton Canal as far as Fairfield.
We came off the canal and made our way on to the Manchester Cycleway (or Fallowfield Loopline as it is also known).
We turned off the Manchester Cycleway and went through North Reddish Park, then made our way to Reddish Vale Country Park.
We went through Reddish Vale.
We came out near Brinnington, then made our way over the M60 and then back to the Stockport Sports Village in Woodley.
It was a very enjoyable ride of about 13 miles.
