Reivers Route Day 6 – Cockermouth to Whitehaven
Reivers Route Day 6 was the final leg of our tour, and it was with a sense of ‘all good things must come to an end’ that we left the Manor House Hotel in Cockermouth. They had been extremely welcoming and nothing was too much for them, certainly a recommended place to stay.
It was a cool and overcast morning as we crossed the River Derwent.
And then made our way through Papcastle.
We continued to cycle along the River Derwent valley.
At Camerton there was an extremely steep hill to climb up to the old railway line. This path is also used by the Sea-to-Sea (C2C).
Once on the railway line it was then a steady downhill. First through Seaton.
And then Northside where Hadrian’s Cycleway also crosses the path.
And into Workington.
After weaving our way through the town we picked up the old railway line again on the other side.
Eventually we reached the little village of Lowca on the outskirts of the Whitehaven district.
From here we got our first proper view of the coast.
We then dropped down into Parton,
We picked up another old railway line which followed the coastline around Parton Bay and Tanyard Bay.
Finally we reached the Whitehaven seafront.
We had our group finishing photos taken at the start/finish of the Sea-to-Sea (C2C).
We continued around the seafront.
And found The Beacon Museum. As it turns out, when we looked at the route map THIS is the official start/finish of the Reivers Route! We decided to stop here and enjoy a well earned lunch and a cuppa.

Finally it was time to get on the train …and home.
This has been a fantastic week of cycling. Our Reivers Route total was 193 miles cycled. It is a challenging route, but one we can highly recommend to anyone considering cycling a coast-to-coast. Now we look forward to our next tour … the Celtic Trail.
