North Coast 500 Day 5 – Dundonnell to Ullapool
We had finished North Coast 500 Day 4 in the rain, and we began North Coast 500 Day 5 in the rain. Yet again the weather would prove a major factor for the day. Today, we were due to cycle from Dundonnell to Ullapool. On paper, we considered this to be potentially the easiest day of the tour … on paper.
Leaving Wilma’s Guesthouse we began by cycling alongside Little Loch Broom, we set off in the rain.
Then cycled through Dundonnell village.
Following the A832 we tracked the Dundonnell River.
In doing so, we were gradually climbing the main hill of the day on our way up to Corrieshalloch Gorge.
Further up we crossed Abhainn Cuileig. Once again, even through the wind and rain, the scenery was fantastic.
Upon reaching the top, we then began cycling down the other side and towards Corrieshalloch Gorge.
At Corrieshalloch Gorge we went for a walk down to the falls and onto the suspension bridge.
The falls are part of a National Trust for Scotland national nature reserve. The River Droma forms a spectacular mile-long slot gorge.
We had hoped to have some lunch at the newly built Corrieshalloch Gateway to Nature Centre. However, since the cafe is outside, on a wet and windy day like this we weren’t tempted.
Instead, we joined the A835 and cycled on down to Lael Crafts Gallery and Coffee Stop. They had an open wood fire here, so we took some time out to warm up and dry off a little.
Interestingly, we had visited this coffee stop on our journey home from cycling the Hebridean Way last year. Indeed, we had cycled the whole of this final section of the route, though in the opposite direction, on our way to Inverness that day.
The final section of our journey took us alongside Loch Broom.
Halfway along Loch Broom, we arrived in Ullapool.
We were staying at Ullapool Youth Hostel.
When we arrived at the YHA it was too early to book in. It was early in the afternoon, though somewhat past lunchtime and we hadn’t eaten, so we went in search of something to eat. Thankfully we found a good meal at the Caledonian Hotel.
Later in the evening, we went for a meal at Essence of India.
For the fifth day in a row, the wind and rain had played havoc with our cycling. However, we had managed to battle our way to Ullapool. In doing so we had completed another 29 miles.

Tomorrow we are cycling to Achmelvich.
