Mellor Cross

Mellor Cross

We are all still struggling with coronavirus pandemic lockdown. It is particularly a struggle when in the meantime we have blazing hot sunshine outside! Furthermore, while some travel restrictions have been lifted, judging by some of the media images of popular visitor sites, it still seems unwise to travel too far. Thankfully, there is no need. For as Sarah, Andy S and I discovered when we cycled out to Mellor Cross, there are always some fantastic cycle routes to explore right here on our doorstep.

For this ride, we met outside Andy S’s home and began by cycling up Cote Green Road.

Next, we joined Glossop Road and followed this for a few miles.

Then we turned into Sandy Lane and a stiff climb saw us heading up to Higher Chisworth. The clue is in the name!

Another stiff climb followed …

We were, however, rewarded with a fantastic view.

At the end of Sandy Lane, we turned into New Mills Road and picked up NCN Route 68 (it’s an Andy S route, so what did you expect?!)

Then, a little further on we joined Gun Road.

A mile or so further up the road we turned into Bogguard Road.

This took us up to Mellor Cross.

After returning back down Bogguard Road we joined Briargrove Road. This took us into Derbyshire.

We then turned off towards Bate Mill.

Then after Bate Mill, we headed for New Mills.

In New Mills, we found Clockwork Cafe.

We stopped for a brew and cake … though not in the cafe itself since that isn’t allowed at the moment.

There were also some locals watching our cake!

Back on the road, we headed up Strines Road.

This eventually brought us back into Marple.

For the final section of our route, we cycled through Brabyns Park.

Finally, we cycled up Cote Green Lane and back to the start.

For Sarah and I, this cycle route with a different starting point brought us a fresh and differing perspective of our local area. We may have only cycled 16 miles, but along the route, we had enjoyed some stunning views. You can view our Mellor Cross route below:
