JOGLE Day 9 – Grasmere to Preston
After a very pleasant day of rest for us all in Grasmere yesterday on JOGLE Day 8, on JOGLE Day 9 it was back to the real business.
It was, as has been the case every day so far, a cool (though slightly warmer) and overcast day as we quickly picked up the A591 and passed Grasmere and Rydal lakes.
Trying to come off the busy road as often as possible we diverted briefly via Ambleside.
Of course avoiding the busy road wasn’t always possible.
Once we had turned off at Windermere however we were soon on the quieter roads.
This morning session of cycling would also prove challenging as we made our through the Lakeland hills to Underbarrow for our morning break.
Once again the inn was closed, and once again our support team of Nic and Sarah came to our rescue.
Then it was back to enjoying the green lanes again …
…and the hills.
We took lunch at Carnforth Rail station, famous for that Brief Encounter scene.
Tracey’s husband Dan and daughter Victoria came up to share the rest day in Grasmere with her. And they then came over to share lunch in Carnforth on their way back home to Stockport.
After lunch we cycled on NCN Route 6 which follows Lancaster Canal.
We crossed over the Millennium Bridge in Lancaster.
And then followed the A588 to Cockerham. Andy had planned an afternoon break at Hornby. Thankfully Sarah noticed that this was 25 miles off-route before we made the diversion! Instead, Sarah and Nic found an alternative, The Pudding House Cafe, just beyond Cockermouth.
After this last break we then continued through Garstang and then along the A6 to Preston.
Tonight we are staying at the Ashwood Hotel.
Today we cycled 64 miles and climbed just under 3000 feet. You can view our JOGLE Day 9 route from Grasmere to Preston below:

Tomorrow we cycle through the industrial north-west (we are now truly back in to civilisation) and on to Whitchurch.
