JOGLE Day 12 – Ludlow to Portishead
JOGLE Day 12 was notable for two main aspects. It was a day where the route used major roads for longer periods of time than we have so far been used to, and secondly we crossed the Severn Bridge. As mentioned yesterday the latter marks the beginning of the final section of our JOGLE.
From a personal health point of view my sore teeth have continued to be painful so this has made parts of my day less enjoyable than I would otherwise have hoped.
The day began in leisurely fashion as we left Ludlow Woofferton Travelodge and followed the country lanes to Leominster.
We then picked up the A49 and put our heads down as we cycled to Hereford. This included a major climb through Howe Wood.
We met up with Nic and Sarah at the Hereford Tea Room.
And then after navigating our way round the city centre we followed NCN Route 46 along the old railway line out the other side.
It was then back on to the A49 again for awhile before turning off on to the A466 as we headed for Monmouth.
Then there were a few more hills around St Weonards and Llancloudy as we crossed in to Wales.
Sarah and Nic found an excellent Turkish cafe with a ‘somewat to do with lions’ (as quoted by Sarah!) – Aslan Cafe. Here we all enjoyed an excellent omelette.
Back on the road we followed the Wye Valley.
Past St Briavel’s.
And Tintern Abbey.
Where we met with Sarah and Nic who themselves had stopped off en-route to have a look around.
To Chepstow. Our final break of the day being at the Lime Tree Cafe Bar on Chepstow High Street.
After winding our way through Chepstow we next crossed over the Severn Bridge.

Posing on the Severn Bridge! …
Having crossed the bridge we made our way through Avonmouth along the A403. This was through industrial areas and another road with some heavy traffic. So it was heads down and pedal as quickly as possible again.
In fact we crossed two bridges today – the second one being the Avon Bridge.
Finally after 77 miles and 3600 feet of climbing we arrived at Portishead Travelodge.

After checking in we headed over the street to the new harbour area to get something to eat.
Tomorrow is the shortest day in terms of mileage on our itinerary as we cycle 49 miles to Taunton. Just as well, since we then have three tough days to reach Land’s End.
