Humber Bridge – SCCC Hull Club Weekend
One of the highlights of the Stockport Community Cycling Club calendar is the club weekend. This takes place each September, and this year we had planned rides in the Hull region. It began with this Saturday ride to Barton-Upon-Humber and a trip over the Humber Bridge.
There were over thirty of us who met at Melton Ross, and it was a fine day for a cycle ride. I was leading the ride, and Sarah was the back-leader.
We began with a steady climb up Elsham Hill.
Continuing along Middlegate Lane we were surrounded by the wide crop fields.
These eventually opened to provide some excellent views out over Lincolnshire.
The roads were excellent and virtually empty. We passed more tractors than cars! It is also a sparsely populated area This tiny industrial area that we passed near to Horkstow, was about as close to any signs of any population that we passed until Barton-Upon-Humber.
We soon got our first site of the Humber Bridge.
After just over ten miles of cycling we reached the edge of Barton-Upon-Humber.
We had to stop briefly for a quick mechanical to fix an issue on one of the cyclist’s wheel.
Just before we reached the coffee stop we gave everyone the option to cycle over the Humber Bridge and back. Most took up the opportunity.
After the cycle ride over it, we then enjoyed the view of the bridge from the estuary as we locked our bikes up and went for something to eat.
This was enjoyed at The Honey Pot cafe in the visitor centre in the Waters’ Edge Country Park.
Feeling refreshed, we left Barton-Upon-Humber and picked up NCN Route 1.
Confession here. The following photos are a mix of the ‘few’ photos I took from the front, and some from the recce back in July. For some unknown reason, Sarah’s photos have disappeared into the ether!
We had to stop for a while, during which Debbie’s second puncture of the day was repaired.
Then we continued on NCN Route 1 again through Burnham.
Finally, it was back towards Elsham and then Melton Ross.
This cycle ride had provided a great start to the club weekend. We had cycled 26 miles. Next, it was off to Hull University, where we were staying, and a well-earned evening meal.
