Disley Hill Walk
The latest in our series of walks preparing Sarah, Neil and Nicholl for their St Cuthbert’s Way walking tour took us up and over Disley Hill.
Having cycled to Knutsford in the morning, we now met again later in the afternoon at Disley Rail Station. The weather continued to look foreboding, but this time we were wrapped up and prepared.
Leaving the car park we immediately joined the North Cheshire Way. It begins (or finishes) at Disley station.
The first section is also shared with the Gritstone Trail.
Soon we were heading along Red Lane towards Lyme Park.
However, since the park was closed we joined a path on the right and headed for Buxton Road.
The path crossed the Manchester-Buxton railway line.
We then briefly walked along Buxton Road.
Before picking up a path opposite Lyme Park entrance, that would take us away from the main road.
It was a steady climb and took us up Disley Hill.
At the top of the hill, we joined Jacksons Edge Road.
A little further on we turned into Disley golf course and followed the path that weaved its way between the greens.
Halfway through the golf course, a path goes off to the left towards Turf Lea.
The path dropped down into a little gulley. Then after crossing over a stile we followed the path round until it reached the end of the Turf Lea Road.
Dropping down the road, we came to another stile on the right.
We followed this track as it continued to drop. A little further down a small tunnel took us under the Peak Forest Canal.
On the other side, a series of steps took us up to the canal. We decided to sprint up these for a challenge!
Once up to the canal towpath, we turned left and headed in the direction of New Mills.
This canal sits quite high up the side of a valley. So you enjoy some lovely views as you walk along the towpath.
Eventually, we reached the outskirts of Disley and left the canal at Hagg Bank Lane.
This brought us into the village.
From here, it was a short walk back to the start.
The actual distance for this walk was approximately 3.5 miles. Once again it had been a walk containing a little bit of everything. This route was a little closer to home and theoretically on more familiar territory than our previous walks. However, it had shown us that even in familiar surroundings it is still possible to find something new.
