Daisy Nook
It’s been a few weeks since I last rode with Stockport Community Cycling Club, and in the meantime, gradually the cooler Autumn weather is taking over. For this cycle ride out to Daisy Nook in Oldham, Tracey was leading the ride and I was the back leader. Sarah, was still unavailable, hence most of the photos are from behind … which is pretty much the only view you get as the back leader!
We met at Woodley.
Our route began by dropping down to the River Tame.
Then, in cycling alongside the river through Haughton Dale, following NCN Route 62. This forms a section of the Trans Pennine Trail.
We continued to follow NCN Route 62 after leaving the river as we cycled up Stockport Road towards Denton.
From Denton, the route took us over toward Reddish.
In North Reddish, we turned and made our way toward Debdale Park.
Our route took us up a muddy (and watery) Debdale Lane.
Next, we navigated our way through Audenshaw.
For this, we mainly followed the Audenshaw Railway Cycle path.
It’s a fine path … just hindered by lots of barriers.
A couple of miles further on we joined the old Hollinwood Canal.
This eventually brought us to the Failsworth border and the entrance to Daisy Nook Country Park.
We took a short break here.
After which, we continued on our way, initially following the Fairbottom branch of the Hollinwood Canal.
Leaving the canal we followed a path alongside Park Bridge Road.
Before eventually joining the road.
Then heading up Alt Hill Lane.
This eventually brought us to the Ashton to Oldham Greenway, NCN Route 626, a path we followed to the outskirts of Ashton-under-Lyne.
We then weaved our way through Ashton-under-Lyne.
Before picking up the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. This took us to Portland Basin.
At the basin, we joined the Peak Forest Canal.
It should have been a straightforward journey back to Woodley … but it wasn’t. A section of the canal was closed at Dukinfield, so we had to navigate around it.
After a little bit of searching, we eventually found our way back onto the canal’s towpath again.
Finally, we were able to follow this towpath back to Woodley.
Our route today covered 19 miles. This had been a muddy cycle ride, however, an enjoyable one nonetheless. It had certainly been good to explore some new paths.
