Cycle it to Bournemouth from Yeovil – The Return

Cycle it to Bournemouth from Yeovil – The Return

With Sarah finishing her work in Yeovil today it was time to move on and return to Bournemouth. I chose a different route for the journey back than from my journey up to Yeovil however.

So it was on an overcast but thankfully warm morning that I left Penn Mill and set off in the direction of Sherborne.

I turned off the main road and hadn’t got very far when my Garmin showed a steep hill. Not only that but the road in front of me petered out and there was a small gap beyond which appeared a track of of some sort.

It soon became clear that this was a track only suitable for mountain bikes as I pushed my bike up hill sliding all over the place!

Thankfully at the top of the hill I was soon back on tarmac and here briefly picked NCN Route 26.

Through Sherborne I joined the A352 since there is no NCN route between here and Sturminster Newton where I needed to get to. Of course there were roadworks at the bottom of a big hill out of Sherborne and as typically happens that meant holding up HGV and its following traffic as I climbed it.

I passed a few interesting landmarks.

Eventually at Sturminster Newton I left the main road.

After cycling through the town I picked up the North Dorset Trailway.

I was now on NCN Route 25 and would follow this for the rest of the day.

Along the North Dorset Trailway I came across Shillingstone Railway Project. This is an old railway station being restored.

It was great little place to stop for a cup of tea.

I had originally planned to have lunch here, however it was still early so I decided to keep cycling on …

To Wimborne …

Through Shapwick.

Passing The National Trusts’ White Mill.

Eventually I reached Wimborne and cycled past the Minster.

I decided to stop here for lunch and found the Cloisters Cafe. It was great little place to sit outside with a cuppa and watch the world go by for awhile.

After lunch I set off for Poole.

It wasn’t long before I reached the outskirts.

For  a while I then joined the Castleman Trailway which took me towards the town centre.

And was also joined by a couple of other cyclists on their way to Swanage for awhile.

Soon we reached the Poole coastline (or rather the Upton Lake end of it)

And the n the main coastline itself.

Leaving my new ‘brief’ friends as they headed for the Sandbanks ferry, my journey finished with a little tour of the Poole suburbs.

My final destination was the Premier Inn on Poole Road which situated on the outskirts of Bournemouth.

Today I cycled nearly 48 miles. You can view my route from Yeovil to Bournemouth below:

Later in the evening we met up with my brother Chris and took him out for a birthday meal. It is his 50th birthday!
