Celtic Trail Day 4 – Carmarthen to Swansea
Celtic Trail Day 4 and today we woke up this morning to driving rain. None of us were really looking forward to our cycle to Swansea! Andy Shaw ended up having to check brakes for quite a few of us, whilst we sheltered from the rain.
We headed out of Carmarthen back to where we had left the route the previous evening.
We were heading towards Kidwelly.
There was quite a lot of climbing involved in the morning.
We were all starting to feel rather fed up with the rain! Ian especially was rather fed up as his back brake was sticking and making everything even harder going. Andy Shaw helped him adjust them.
We then set off again, looking forward to a cafe stop at Kidwelly. The wind was strong and at time the rain felt like needles sticking in your face.
We stopped for lunch at The Gateway cafe in Kidwelly. The rain had stopped as we went into the cafe.
We then nipped down the road to look briefly at Kidwelly Castle. The rain had started up again.
We then got back onto the route. There was plenty of puddle dodging going on.
There were a few places where the path was flooded.
As we reached the coast the wind was brutal! At times we almost got blown off our bikes!
The path through the Millennium Costal Park was a great surface and we were able to cycle along at a reasonable pace for a while.
As we returned to the coast, there were some kite surfers taking advantage of the wind.
As we passed the Wales Wetlands Centre, the path was suitably wet!
The route then returned back to the coast.
We had planned to take an afternoon break at Loughor but we missed the planned pub and then decided to push on to the finish.
The route took us through the Clyne Valley.
As we approached Swansea, we then followed the promenade.
We were staying at the Premier Inn for the night.
Today we cycled 42 miles and climbed about 2000 feet. At times it was really tough but on the whole it was an enjoyable day. We were all ready for a hot shower at the end of the day. I was beginning to wonder if I would get trench foot as my shoes were full of water (and cold) for soooooo long!!!
Having had a few drinks and something to eat, most of us (except Ian) went for a mooch around Swansea. We stumbled upon Swansea Castle.
We then made our way through the shopping area then on to the Marina.
