Celtic Trail Day 3 – Tenby to Carmarthen
After a tough but thankfully sunny day of cycling yesterday, Celtic Trail Day 3 promised to be another challenging day. Sadly it also promised to be rather wet.
At least when we left Tenby, after a hearty breakfast, the sun was shining.
There were some terrific views looking out over the bay.
The calm before the storm.
We set off heading for Saundersfoot.
Following the old mining railway line which cut through the cliffs we continued on to Wiseman’s Bridge.
As we climbed out the village the heaven’s opened. We decided to wait under the trees while the first storm passed by.
Continuing on we dropped into Amroth.
By the time we reached Laugharne (of Dylan Thomas fame) we were all wet and cold, and the cafe stop was very welcome. Most of us enjoyed a bowl of Cawl, the traditional warming Welsh broth.
Eventually we could put off leaving no longer and we needed to brave the wet weather again.
So we set off for St. Clears.
For a while we found ourselves following the busy A40.
Thankfully we were soon back on the quiet lanes.
There were quite a few hills to climb throughout the day.
Finally we had Carmarthen in site.
There was just the centre of town to negotiate.
We arrived at the Boars Head Hotel mid-afternoon – a relatively early finish. We were however glad to get out of the rain.
This had been another challenging day. We had cycled 34 miles, 34 wet and soggy miles, and climbed over 3000 feet.
The earlier than usual finish gave us time to rest and do a few essential jobs (such as clothes washing) before heading off to look for a suitable place for an evening meal.
